Why Clean and Simple is Sometimes Better than Artsy and Unique
CS5 Screenshot

Some time in late 2008, an ad agency designed this realistic interface to propose for Adobe Photoshop CS5 for an online software seller. With the program having been released recently, it's evident that they have decided to go with the usual neutral colored interface. But this proposal got me thinking - as a fellow artist, would I appreciate looking and using an interface that is creative and unique instead of the usual gray tones?

After weighing the pros and cons, the answer would be no. Having a cluttered looking interface full of colors, shapes, and shadows only takes away from the serene feeling of looking at a fresh and empty canvas. There's also the problem with efficiency when the screen just looks too busy, because it takes more time to find tools, and everyone knows time is money.

Someone commented that this particular interface seems kid-friendly, which can both be a good and bad thing. However, for a software that is meant for professionals, it seems insulting to dumb it down.

Would you have been upset if Adobe had used an interface similar to this instead?
